10 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN LASHING OLDER CLIENTS
The truth is, natural eyelashes can change with age. It is common to see eyelashes become thinner, lighter in color, and more sparse. But that does not mean that our mature clients cannot benefit from extensions too! There are challenges to consider when lashing older clients, but nothing that we can’t remedy with a little extra care.
1. Style
Consider the style of lashes when lashing older clients. A more natural looking style is going to suit older clients better, be healthier for their lashes, look age appropriate, and enhance their lashes.
2. Lash Weight
With mature eyelashes being thinner we don’t want to weigh the lash down. Thin diameters and small fans will enhance the natural eyelashes while keeping the integrity.
3. Appropriate Length
Length is also important to consider to avoid weighing down the natural eyelash and giving your client a natural style. Typically, if I’m dealing with mature lashes I do not go more than 2mm longer than the natural lash, sometimes just matching the length is enough.
4. Curl
One of the most frequent complaints I hear from older clients is that they feel their eyes have drooped or they need an eye lift. While we do want to keep with a natural look, I recommend a curlier curl in these situations. A dramatic curl can make the eyes appear more open and lifted.
5. Brown Lashes
A really simple way to make any lash set less dramatic is to use brown eyelashes. Brown eyelashes are especially helpful when lashing fair eyelashes if the client doesn’t want too much darkness.
6. Isolation
Even when the lash line is more sparse, sometimes mature lashes are more challenging to isolate. There can be smaller lashes, the direction can skewed, and the color can be faint. Take extra care to isolate every. single. lash.
7. Coverage
100% coverage is the goal, especially when dealing with sparse eyelashes because every lash is going to be noticeable. There’s no hiding, no tricks, no shortcuts just simple full coverage.
8. Prep
Along with changes to the eyelashes, older clients may have experienced changes to their skin. Oil production tends to ramp up with mature age. Take the time to prep the eyelashes, drying them out of any oils. You can even consider double prepping in extra oily cases.
9. Eyelids
One of the added challenges of working with older clients is working with their eyelids. It is likely that their eyelids droop, sag, or have become hooded. Use your tools! Utilize tools like tape to manipulate the eyelids and making your work space easier.
10. Scheduling
Sometimes the simple answer to a lash problem is to just come in more frequently for appointments. Even with good retention, If your client is trying to combat spare lashes, just have them shorten the time between appointments to stay on top of it.
