PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS: FANNING

Making volume fans requires a lot of moving parts to work together just right— the lash strip, your muscles, the tweezers, and the adhesive. With so many details you are bound to run into problems that require some troubleshooting, but have no fear we’ve got the solutions to easier fanning!

“The lashes are not fanning on the strip with ease”

Brush and fluff the strip. With a clean spoolie, brush out the strip of lashes to prep them and help separate the lashes. You can also use your tweezers to lightly pull apart the end of the lash strip. Fluffing up the strip makes fanning easier!

“My tweezers won’t grip the fan/the fan falls apart during pick up”

Clean your tweezers! It is possible that your tweezers have adhesive stuck to them, or even a leftover eyelash. The littlest build up on your tweezers can really throw off the grip, mess up your fans, or cause pick up issues.

“The fan is perfect, but it closes during placement”

Use the right amount of adhesive. If your fans are automatically closing upon placement, it is likely that there is too much adhesive causing the fan to close as the adhesive moves up the base.  If your fans are staying open, but not staying attached you may need more adhesive.

“The bases are loose and not snatched!”

Pull the lashes/fan towards you with just the right amount of pressure and you’ll get snatched bases every time. You want to avoid picking up the lashes too high or low on the fan, yanking the fan with too much pressure, or pulling straight up from the strip. Snatched bases are going to look the best and perform the best.

“I want my fan to be wider”

If your fan is just a little too wide, apply pressure  on the top of the fan, downwards toward the lash strip like you are flattening it before picking it up. Also, pick up low on the fan because shorter bases will give you a wider fan.

“The fan is too wide!”

Just the opposite of having your fan too wide—apply pressure on the back of the fan, upwards on the fan like you are directing it towards you before picking it up. You will be able to see the fan become more narrow. The same rule applies that narrow fans have longer bases so you can pick up the lashes a little higher on the fan.

“I picked up too many lashes”

If you find that you fanned too many lashes and now have a fan too heavy for your desired placement, don’t toss the fan, instead you can weave through the lashes before pick up. You are going to weave through every other lash leaving half the lashes inside your tweezer and half outside—essentially picking up one fan and leaving another on the strip. You can also just pick up the desired amount and leave the rest behind!
