Keeping Resolutions in 2021
2021, what? It’s a new year and I am here for it. It’s safe to say that a lot of the unexpected happened last year, and although the slate wasn’t swiped clean at midnight and we’re still facing challenges in the new year, it does feel like a fresh start for other things! I know that I am entering the new year focused on the things I can control and I can control my own resolutions and goals! Catch our last year’s post on goal setting tips, here and keep reading for a 2021 expansion!
It’s All in the Details
When making resolutions and setting goals it is important to be specific. It’s easy to give up on a vague or loose goal compared to a goal with clear and precise guidelines. If your goal is to “make more money” it might feel hard to reach. Try to break it down into specifics “get x amount of new clients each month” “focus on marketing and social media to get new clients” “raise prices when my schedule is 80% full”. Making your goals concrete makes them achievable!
Keep Your List Short & Sweet
A long never-ending list of goals can be overwhelming and give you the mentality that if you can’t do it all you shouldn’t do any of it. That is not the case! Fine tuning your list will help you see what’s most important to you. Having fewer resolutions will give you the energy to put 100% into the goals that you are focused on. Also remember that 1. you can add to your list as you complete your goals and 2. habits are more likely to stick if you focus on one before moving onto the next.
Make Yourself Accountable
There’s no harm in giving up if there’s no consequences, right? It is easy to fall into that mindset but if you share your goals with others or get them out of your mind to somewhere tangible you are more likely to complete those goals. Find a support system, make it public, find someone with similar goals to work with, or even write it down somewhere you will see every day. Whatever makes you feel accountable!
Don’t Press Repeat
What’s that saying about, nothing changes if nothing changes? Starting the same resolution over year after year and not getting the results you want (looking at me and my six pack abs goal) can be defeating. In order to avoid this cycle take the time to evaluate why it might not have worked in the past and focus on what aspects did work and what you can change to improve. I always say “I’m going to post on Instagram every day and be the consistency queen.” Well, if you check my Instagram I post heavy through January and fizzle out by spring, sprinkling in posts here and there throughout the year. This year I’m not going to purge all of my content in January but plan ahead and make a more realistic goal like “10 posts a month.”
Avoid Pressure
I think it is so important to remember that there is a lot of pressure at the start of a new year to hit the ground running. Although the new year can be a motivational push that some need it can also feel very heavy and overwhelming. There have been years that I avoided resolutions completely because it didn’t feel right and if anything it was weighing me down thinking I needed to change so many things at once. You don’t need January 1st to have goals! Take care of yourself and remember you can apply these tips anytime.
