HOW TO: COMBAT JITTERY, FLUTTERING & WATERY EYES.

Applying eyelash extensions to a client who is jittery, has fluttering eyelids, or has watery eyes can be difficult, slow us down, and affect retention. However, with a few adjustments we can combat this and make our clients as comfortable as possible!

A Relaxing Environment sets the Mood

A relaxed client’s eyes are overall going to be less fluttery and we can contribute to that by providing relaxing music, offering a blanket, using soft lighting while their eyes are open, and limiting surrounding distractions. If you have less control of the environment, suggest your client wear headphones.

Less Talking means Less Movement

If you’re struggling with your client’s eyes moving too much, minimize the talking and watch the difference. Even the most relaxed eyelid is going to move while talking—so an already jittery or watery eye will be enhanced. Talking too much can also contribute to the under eye pads moving out of place.

Advise your Clients to Avoid Caffeine

Caffeine can be a big contributor to jittery eyelids. If your client’s eyelids can’t relax during the appointment advise that they hold off on caffeine until after. Caffeine jitters will appear as a fluttery eyelid like closed eye blinks.

Use a Counterweight on the Eyelid

When dealing with eyes that just won’t relax, you can apply pressure using tape or another eye pad directly on the eyelid but not touching the eyelashes to provide a “counterweight.” Just apply directly to the eyelid. Sometimes even just a little pressure from our finger can settle the eyelid enough to spark relaxation.

Isolate, Place, Hold, and Keep Holding

Calm eyelids are our best canvas, but it is likely that we have to deal with a moving target in some capacity. As always isolate completely but when placing the extension don’t chase the lash but use the movement to your advantage by letting the natural lash’s movement “come to you”, and then hold the placement just a second longer to prevent those fluttering eyelashes to cause stickies.

Soak up the Tears & Dry the Eyes

Watery eyes are not a friend to eyelash extensions. If you’ve made sure there is not anything irritating the eye, like an eye pad, and that the lighting is not too harsh, and the client is relaxed and not talking but you’re still dealing with a watery eye—well some clients are just naturally more watery. If you’re dealing with a watery eye use a lint free wipe to help soak up the tears and use a fan to continually keep those lashes dry!
