5 THINGS I WISH I KNEW AS A NEW LASH ARTIST
Being a new lash artist can really test your patience. Feeling like your skills will never improve, figuring out how to get clients in the door, and learning the business side of it all—it is sure to be overwhelming. Most importantly, don’t give up! Here’s 5 things I wish I knew as a new lash artist.
Eyelash Extensions are a Learned Skill
Nobody is born knowing how to do eyelashes, everybody is bad at first, and the money isn’t instant but it will come. Don’t give up during your first client because it’s okay if you’re slow or if you can’t get every eyelash. Practice! Practice on your friends or family, practice lash pick up, practice holding your tweezers, and practice volume fans outside of appointments without the pressure of a client. Before you know it you’ll gain muscle memory and confidence. Pro tip: take pictures of every client so you can learn from your own work and see your improvement over time.
Never stop Learning
Lash courses are not one and done, there is always something to be learned. My advice is to make sure you are investing in education and never stop learning! You don’t want to become stagnant. Beyond initial training and certification there are advanced trainings, online courses, social media, free resources, and lash community groups. With technology and advances in the lash industry there are enough resources to literally never stop learning.
Set Boundaries Out of the Gate
As a new lash artist ready to take on the world it can be easy to always say yes, work long hours, and give heavy discounts. From a business point of view, it is important to set boundaries from the start and remind yourself that you can’t do everyone’s lashes. You will thank yourself later!
Quality First, Speed Second
We all know that time is money, but we never want to sacrifice our client’s eyelashes. As a new lash artist focus on speed last! Master your isolating and placement and speed will come. It’s easy to get caught up in faster is better and comparing to the lash artist next door but you will see longevity with clients if quality comes first.
Find Products you Trust
You don’t need every product under the sun and at the beginning you don’t need a wide variety of products. Get the basics and focus on good quality products you can trust instead of a lot of products from all over the place. As you grow and expand you can then add inventory and experiment with different products.
