RETENTION TIPS: WORKING WITH OILY CLIENTS
If you are not considering your client’s skin type when applying eyelash extensions you are missing out on achieving the best possible retention. Oily skin types tend to be the most troublesome, but not to worry because with a few extra precautions you’ll see better retention.
Prep & Prime
Oily lash lines need extra care before application. Make sure your clients are cleansing before the appointment or add cleansing to their service before starting. Your client will need a clean lash line and a clean face around the eye. Along with cleansing, use a primer to help absorb oil and dry the lashes out.
Double the After Care
We preach after care to every client but it’s especially important for the naturally oily. Our skin’s oil can break down adhesive so we do not want sitting oil. Recommend that your oily clients cleanse every single day and potentially twice, morning and night. Proper after care will have the biggest effect on retention.
Placement
As the lash artist, there’s a few adjustments to make during application. Avoid placing lashes next to each other one after the other, and instead bounce around the lash line between eyes to provide extra setting time. You may also notice that you need extra adhesive and that’s okay! You don’t want to overload the eyelash with adhesive but using just enough extra will help secure those extensions.
Nano Mist
In oily cases I have found a lot of success with the nano mister! We want to secure the bond before the lash line gets oily again. If necessary, don’t be afraid to nano mist during the appointment. What we do to the lashes after application is just as important as prepping the lashes.
Oil Blotting
If your client is all over oily and notices their eyelids accumulating oil during the day, recommend a simple oil blotting pad to wipe the eye lid. Oil is not a friend to eyelash extensions so anything to minimize the oil around the eyelashes will help with long term retention.
No Touching
Everyone has natural oils on their hands which is why it’s always recommended to avoid touching. In the case of extra oily skin it is a must to avoid touching! I would also go as far to say avoid sleeping on their side as much as possible to avoid “run off” in extreme cases.
